Biomechanic Acupuncture

Biomechanic Acupuncture is an orthopedic approach to health and well-being that addresses issues with the body by enhancing its strengths while tackling its weaknesses. It first came about during and unpublished clinical study that enrolled clients into one of two post surgery rehabilitation programs. The first program involved corrective training alone. The second group incorporated acupuncture along with a corrective training program. The results within a few short months were significant across the board. Clients who took part in acupuncture treatments twice weekly recovered in 2-3 months compared with those who utilized just training and took 6-9 months to recover. The group that utilized acupuncture plus training made full recovery in half the amount of time. Acupuncture has been proven time and again to be highly effective in not just rehabilitation of injury and pain, but also general muscle soreness, recovery and restoration. It speeds recovery by ridding the body of adhesions and scar tissue while invigorating/moving old blood to allow new (fresh) blood to fill up the needed areas.

Biomechanic Training

While working with personal training clients for several years, we have observed the overall effects to be much greater when Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) techniques were integrated into the training program. The combination of TCM methods and Fitness Training modalities emphasize alignment, joint dysfunction, flexibility, mobility, and injury rehabilitation. The Biomechanic portion of therapy is designed to stabilize and strengthen muscles surrounding a joint to restore, protect, and improve movement and function thus preventing injury (or the reoccurrence of past injuries). It’s especially effective for enhancing sports performance. Rather than simply treating symptoms, our methods get to the root cause, thus speeding up the recovery process and decreasing the possibility of recurrence, ultimately promoting a return to good health and complete wellness.

Biomechanic Treatments

Biomechanic treatments are geared towards optimal function: alignment, form, and technique. Being able to hold alignment while in motion is top priority! It’s not enough to display alignment at rest (from a static position) alone, but also during active and dynamic movements. Integration and implemention of these specialized techniques are the key to the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries or pain. We address alignment associated with the pain or injury by assessing joint mechanics. We examine the problematic areas and note where the discrepancies lie. This is the investigative, detective work of finding the culprit of the dysfunction (tightnesses/ weaknesses/ dormancies causing improper alignment/ movement patterns) that results in injury. We then implement the proper form and technique needed to make sure the alignment holds when resistance and movement are applied.

Now we get to the Healing Method which combines standard acupuncture and biomechanics…

The Healing Method

There are two parts to this equation: (1) the ailment, and (2) the individual. There are no cookie cutter approaches here. Treatments may vary from one individual to the next that exhibit similar injuries/postural distortions or other medical conditions as there are many contributing factors to consider that could be delaying the healing process. Given the body’s current state of wellness ( or lack there of) it may already be expending its energy on one or more of the following which could hinder the healing of any additional issues: No body is created equal. Its constitution (genetic makeup), environment, stress (emotional, mental, physical), disease, autoimmine disorders, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, sleep/recovery, workload, outdoor/ indoor climate, body temperature, lifestyle choices, physical activities, diet, etc., all affect the healing process and all need to be addressed accordingly.

We look at the entire picture and address the body as a whole. When one area is in disharmony, then other parts have to compensate in order to keep one moving through life. The body will always find the path of least resistance. which means when faced with health challenges it can deviate from its ideal function. And that’s our job - to find that original path and retrace its steps back to the place where there was complete balance and harmony of all (body) systems. We do this by looking at all three patterns of of posture (sitting, standing, movement) noting any shifts that may occur when switching from one position to the next. In order to assure lasting results we do this testing before and after each treatment.
